This past Tuesday morning, Governor McDonnell signed my House Bill 2105, Electric Vehicle Charging Stations, at a ceremony in Richmond. This new law removes barriers to charging stations and will allow Virginia’s businesses to take the lead in establishing the infrastructure to make this exciting new technology accessible and convenient. With gas prices hovering around $4.00 a gallon it is important to lay the foundation for providing our families with real alternatives that take advantage of energy produced right here in Virginia. Richmond needs to let small businesses innovate by eliminating unnecessary hurdles and by promoting these new technologies. Until the enactment of HB 2105, Virginia law only allowed public utilities to sell electricity. The new law eliminates this outdated requirement and allows businesses to engage in the retail sale of electricity for the purpose of vehicle charging services. Opening up the door for electric vehicles has the potential to revitalize our domestic auto industry, reduce air pollution, and reduce our reliance on foreign fuel.
